Educational Sites for adults

I always talk about educating our children and talk about games so they can learn, but it leaves people wondering "What about us adults aren't their sites for us? Are there educational sites built to help adults learn?" There's more than just these five I talked about weeks ago. The answer is yes! There are actually many sites for adults to learn, some free college courses, and games. If you're bored on a Saturday night, or any night, and want to get your learning on or push your brain to new limits there are sites for you. I did exclude games like logic puzzles and games like that because to me while they may push your brain you can find stuff like that anywhere.

Adult games

GCF Global

Read Theory: Read Theory is great for all ages, even children. It helps with reading comprehension and everything is free. I actually love using Read Theory if I'm having a day where my reading comprehension could be a bit better. It helps me refocus my mind.

GCF Global:  Form learning how to read the nutritional information on food to learning how to read a subway map or even learn how to read a schedule. GCF has you covered. You don't need to be embarrassed if you haven't learned how to do something or need some refreshing.

Code Spark: It's no surprise I'm back on a child's site learning how to code, for someone who didn't know how to code before. I'm in love with the way it teaches me how to code, without being overly scary about it.

Dave Conservatoire: A place to learn about music, for everyone who wants to learn about music. There are tons to learn on this site, I have yet to break the ice, and had almost forgotten I had it bookmarked so that I could learn about music a bit more. So here I am learning again about music

Online Courses

Open Yale Courses: Ever want to study at Yale? Now you can! Yale offers some free online courses and open access to anyone who wants to learn.

Saylor: Another place to learn at. Right now I'm learning pre-college, English to refresh myself. I should have taken this course years ago, and I have yet.

Ed Ex: You don't get bounced from site to site with Ed Ex, Ed Ex is its own learning platform. Most of the courses are short and sweet, and only take an hour a day (or less) to complete.

Stanford, You're taken to many sites from Stanford, but most of the sites you are sent to our free and there are no hidden fees to learn something new. It does take a bit of searching to find out what course you may want to learn or take. But they have so many options

Brain Games

Mind Gamer: Play a series of 3 brain activities every day to help with cognitive flexibility, working memory, spatial reasoning, visual analysis and much more.

Free brain games: This site is limited to the brain games it has and does get repetitive day after day, but it does help with stretching your brain.

Mind Games:  Mind games, just have random games. You don't have any daily goals to meet. You can play what you want to, the only downfall is there's no way to track your progress.

Neuro Nation: Neuronation is both paid and free. The free aspect is just as beneficial as the paid version. The main difference between paid and free versions is that the free doesn't customize and help you focus on your weak points. If you want to pay for the site it's $14.00 for 3 months.

Luminosity: Luminosity is one of best-known brain sites, it was advertised all the time a few years ago. It's why I tried searching for free brain games. I wasn't willing to pay for Luminosity. If you want to pay the free version, they have only a handful of games and don't track your progress.

10 Gluten-free Apple Cinnamon Recipes that look too good to pass up

When I think of reinvention, and I think about fall, I think about apple cinnamon, and when I think of about apple cinnnamon I get hungry. When I get hungry thinking about apple cinnamon recipes I get sad because all I imagine recipes and foods that I can't eat. But instead of being upset, I knew it was time to find some recipes to

10. Apple Cinnamon Rolls from Ela Vegan
Before going gluten-free, imagined life without cinnamon rolls. But when I saw this beautiful recipe online I knew exactly what I wanted to eat. I wanted these rolls. Never once have I thought about adding apples to a cinnamon roll ever. It's a great idea.

9. Apple Cinnamon Muffins by From my Bowl
The cripsity crunchy cinnamon topping has that smell I was talking about that fall smell. I can't even begin to imagine how great they taste in combination with an apple, inside of a muffin nonetheless. Even though the apple next to the muffin are decor in the photo, I'd be tempted to put them on top of the muffin to have more of a crispy apple on top as well.

8. Apple Spice Cupcakes by Zest and Lemons
Move over pumpkin spice, apple spice is the new girl in town. I'll openly admit that I never really liked pumpkin spice, but apple spice sounds delicious, and when you put it in cupcake form. It gets your eyes popping and your mouth drooling.

7. Apple Cinnamon Granola by The Fit Cookie
Back to my mix and match days. I don't ever remember seeing apples being used a lot in making granola, and that almost saddens me. Apples are my all-time favorite fruit and they need to get more credit then they are given. Apples, can they Granola? Yes, they can!

6. Apple Cinnamon Coffee Cake by Flavuor and Savour
I wish my grandpa was still alive to eat this recipe. My grandpa loved his coffee cakes. I don't think I would have loved coffee cakes if not for my grandpa. I can only imagine what he'd think if I made this recipe and let him try it. I'm almost sure that he'd love it. Not just because his granddaughter made it but because has cinnamon!

5.  Apple Cinnamon Waffles by Mile High Mitts
I love breakfast food, and I really love waffles, so imagine when I heard that you can make gluten-free apple cinnamon waffles. I was overjoyed! I think I hit the jackpot. No way would this list be complete without mentioning apple cinnamon waffles, ever!

4. Gluten-Free Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal Squares by My Gluten-Free Kitchen
As if gluten-free granola wasn't enough. I know my snackle box would be complete if I put apple cinnamon oatmeal squares in one of the compartments. It's better than protien bars and it's way better than thinking about something store-bought.

I know, I know I know, this isn't one of those Mix and Match bowls. But it is a breakfast bowl with three of my favorite things in it gluten-free oatmeal, apples, and cinnamon! The best thing though, I could mix and match my grain bowl if I really wanted to, not that I would, but it's still an open option.

2. Apple Cinnamon Hand Pies by A dash of Meg Nut
When nothing is safe at McDonald's, not even the water, you start missing your McDonald's apple pies. The warm gooey goodness of the filling, the warmth of the dough, all made me happy. Now I don't even have to leave my house if I want to have an apple pie! I can make one myself, and not worry about cross-contamination.

1. Cinnamon-Sweet Potato Apple Bake by The Real Food Dieticians
I haven't given side dishes any limelight during this post at all. I almost feel saddened. That's okay though! A cinnamon sweet potato apple bake is a side dish, and you won't feel bad bringing it to any family get-togethers this fall!

My favorite 5: My favorite books from PJ Library

I promise that this will  be my last blog post about books for a while, but books have been on my mind a lot lately as you can tell, I've talked about my favorite books from my childhood,I've talked about reading more than one book at a time, I talked about my favorite children's books quotes, and I've even mentioned about George! Because I love to be well cultured in this house and I get my PJ Library books a few times a month. My little library is beautiful. This week I wanted to post my top 5 books ever from them and not just books for certain major holidays.

Most of these books aren't even outrightly religious in nature, but here are my top 5? Have you read any of the books? If you haven't what books would you read to your children?

5. Welcome by Barroux
Three polar bears are in a need of a new home. They find many places that they thought they could call home, but the inhabitants weren't too nice or they said there wasn't any room. Will they always struggle to find a place called home? There's only one way to find out!

4.I can Help by David Hyde Costello
This book is adorable, a little duckling gets lost and a monkey helps him find his way home. Then the monkey needs help after falling out of a tree, but a giraffe saves him. The book goes on and on about how everyone helps someone else. It's the way the world should be. Everyone helping one another. I Can Help teaches both children and adults that everyone needs a little bit of help.

3.A Hen for Izzy Pippik by Aubrey Davis
Ever find a hen on the ground in a crate? Neither have I. But the girl in the book Shaina found a chicken once. It belonged to some guy named Izzy Pippik, and she's determined to make sure that the hen goes back with Izzy. There are so many warm surprises in the book and even a recipe for vegetarian chicken noodle soup in the back. Yum! Maybe one day I'll find a chicken on the ground and keep it.

2. The Lion and The Bird by Marianne Dubuc
In the book the lion helps an injured bird and lets him stay all winter long. The bird leaves in the spring and the lion is sad. What happened to his bird friend? The lion is worried sick! If you haven't guessed it, this book is all about kindness and compassion, and the warmth of someone's heart.

1. Do Unto Otters: A Book about Manners by Laurie Keller
When I think of puns, "Doing unto otters," never passed my mind, but now that I've heard the saying I'm reminded that I must remain respectful to others. Being respectful and gracious are important rules in life, not just because a Otters move next door to rabbits.

Tag Thursday: Time for Fall

Just like springtime, The time has come to talk about the fall, we're close to the time where the trees are changing, and everyone's drinking apple cider. Then I'm back to thinking about the old tags I've done for Halloween and Thanksgiving.  Of course, this tag was found on none other than Mama Kat's page.

1. Favorite Fall scent.
Hands down it'd have to be anything apple hint of cinnamon. Most people are pumpkin pie and pumpkin spice fanatics. Whatever happened to making things cinnamon apple-flavored? Not like Apple Jacks, or Apple Cinnamon Cheerios. There's a whole wide cinamon world out there.

2. Best way to spend a rainy day.
Indoors reading. I can read all of the time, but when it's raining out, it's nice to drown out the drip, drip, drip with a book.
3. Favorite Fall Drink.
Warm apple cider with cinnamon. I know that shouldn't come as a surprise since I love apple cider. It always brings me back to a time when I was younger.

4. Football, yay or nay?
I don't hate it, but I'm not a football fan. I never really was a sports fan period.

5. Favorite article of clothing this Fall.
I love scarves, and this silk scarf is absolutely adorable. It's not Halloweenish, just very fall-like and that's what I really like about it.

Amazon

6. Haunted house, haunted hayride, or haunted corn maze?
Haunted Hayrides. I like hayrides in general, and really need to find a local hayride this fall. It doesn't even have to be haunted, it just has to be a hayride. I haven't gone on a hayride for ages, and I think going back to my childhood would be great.

7. The scariest movie you’ve ever seen…
I love scary movies, and I can't think of one that actually truly scared me the most. I know that sounds weird, but I can't think of a scary movie at all that is scary enough to make the top of the list.

8. Favorite candy to eat on Halloween?
Reese's all year long. It doesn't have to be Halloween either. Actually, I can't eat the Reese's that are in the smaller bags or kingsized Reese's because of the whole gluten, issue. Sad huh?

Hershey's

9. What will you or your kids be this year?
It's still early. I have no clue what I want to be for Halloween if I want to be anything as of yet. Same goes with the kids. It's only the end of August, I still have a few weeks to choose what I want to be.

10. Favorite fall recipe.
I have yet to think of one. Maybe I'll reinvent fall recipes this year. I do need to reinvent anyway don't I?
11. What is your Favorite thing about Fall?
I love the way the trees change from green to all the pretty colors, and the leaves fall on the ground. They're so beautiful, and they have that smell that reminds me, "Hey Jen, it's time for fall."

12. Who else would you like to see complete the I Heart Fall YouTube Tag?
Quite honestly, I want any of my readers to do that tag, and tag me in it. I don't have anyone special in mind. But it would be interesting to see other's takes on their favorite things about fall.

To my readers: What are your favorite things about the fall?

My top 6 quotes from Children's Books that Inspire Me

I've been reading a lot lately, and even when I read adult books, I go back to a time when I loved to read children's books. I'd sit with a stack of books on my lap reading over and over again the same books. Books have always had a place in my heart, and so do a lot of the quotes I remember as a child. We all have our favorite children's book quotes that inspire us. Here are some of my favorite quotes.

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot
Nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” --The Lorax

“It has been a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. My mom says some days are like that. Even in Australia.”--Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

"If ever there is tomorrow when we're not together... there is something you must always remember. You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. But the most important thing is, even if we're apart... I'll always be with you."--The House at Pooh Corner

“All the world is made of faith, and trust, and pixie dust."-- Peter Pan

“Because, this is a very great adventure, and no danger seems to me so great as that of knowing when I get back to Narnia that I left a mystery behind me through fear.” --The Voyage of the Dawn Treader by C.S. Lewis

“Believing takes practice.”--A Wrinkle in Time

Chocolate Bar Review

Today I’ve been thinking about getting me a little perk me up, one that I had set aside as a snacklebox idea. But not for a snacklebox, just because it keeps playing in my mind. It’s the Awake Bar, the one with the own it. Mainly because it’s one of those day’s I’m running ragged. It feels like my energy is draining from me faster than a lightning bolt.

The Awake Bars are a great choice if you’re not into drinking carbonated drinks, and you wanted something that tasted great. I saw these beauties at the store and was a bit iffy about buying one, the price was more than a candy bar, but less than buying a candy bar and a Pepsi or a dreaded energy drink from the front of the store. So what was there to lose? It had caramel in it. This was before I knew I could actually eat Snickers because they’re gluten-free, and needed my caramel and caffeine fix.

Don’t go into buying this bar thinking that caffeine has a taste because it doesn’t. This bar doesn’t taste any different than any other candy bar, it’s just the caffeine that makes it different than your everyday candy bar. It’s pretty obvious that there’s caffeine in these little bars after you eat them.

There’s a warning on the label that says you might want to put socks on a chicken. I wouldn’t attempt it. Don’t do it, but you might just want to because you’re not tired anymore. I do urge against having a bar like this if you are pregnant or sensitive to caffeine. But if you’re an average every day cola drinker like I am, and you are a chocoholic, this is a great alternative.

Beginner gluten-free Tips for hoping at Aldi

I never got around to my 24 hour Aldi Challenge but in the long run, I really couldn’t. Our local Aldi doesn’t have all the nice stuff that other Aldi’s have at least as far as gluten-free food is concerned. But because of that, I have learned many important tips for shopping gluten-free at Aldi so that anyone can do it.
Image result for aldi emblem
1. Check the prices: Just because you think something is cheaper at Aldi, doesn’t mean that it is. The Shells and Cheese, and their gluten-free “Hot Pockets” are usually a great price. But check the gluten-free pretzels. Now that Snyder’s and Handover have their own gluten-free chips pretzels in other stores, I’ve realized that the better price would be Snyder’s and Handover would be tons cheaper.

2. Always check to see if the item is gluten-free: It’s easy to tell if Aldi’s products are gluten-free. They either will have one or two things on the box or container a certified gluten-free symbol or say that they’re gluten-free on it. Usually, if the item is in the gluten-free section, which isn’t an entirely huge section the item will be gluten-free.
Image result for gluten free symbolImage result for gluten free symbolImage result for gluten free symbol

3. Once you know what stuff Aldi sells to make a meal plan: If you can make a meal plan for foods you can get at Aldi and both at your local stores. It’ll make becoming gluten-free easier. It’ll even be a lot cheaper than just picking up random items off the shelf and hoping that you actually made a meal.

4. If it’s your first time trying something new from Aldi, only by one package: The only time that this rule doesn’t apply is if you live far away and you think you might like an item. But because I’m almost next door to our local Aldi store, I usually only buy one package of whatever it may be so that if I don’t like the product I won’t eat it again. Sometimes the gluten-free equivalent of an item is not as good as the regular version, even when it comes to Aldi’s.

5. Always look at seasonal items: Seasonal items at Aldi, especially during Celiac month have some interesting items sometimes. In some of the Facebook groups I’m in, people would post photos of cheesecakes, donuts, and even gluten-free pizzas. That they found. I’d run to my local Aldi, hoping that they’d be carrying exactly what I wanted when it came to vegetarian and gluten-free stuff during Celiac month. Just to be let down. But every store is different, it doesn’t hurt to check and see if your store sells something different than other people are advertising.

6. Join gluten-free and celiac groups online: Facebook has tons of gluten-free and celiac-friendly groups. If you need help finding any message me through my blog’s Facebook page, and I’ll try to help you. Being in online groups with people with gluten intolerance, gluten allergies and celiacs gives you a leg up about what is being sold at Aldi or anywhere else online. You don’t even have to be left out in the dark when it comes to going gluten-free.

Reader question: Do you have any tips for shopping at Aldi that I forgot?

How to read more than one book at at time and not get confused

Remember that debate about what book I wanted to read a few months ago? I couldn’t do and I didn’t know what to do. I couldn’t pick what I wanted to read? Even if you don’t remember and don’t want to click the link to the old post it’s okay there are ways that you can actually read more than one book at a time, in a certain period and also not get everything confused.

Step 1: Have your books picked out beforehand:

As a beginner, I suggest you pick no more than two or three books to want to read beforehand. Unless you have nothing to do during the day and all you want to do is read. With that said it’s fine to pick out however many books you want to read. Next month I plan On reading both Whatever After: Two Peas in a Pod by Sara Mylonowski and .Hack//Legend of Twilight within three weeks
Image result for .hack//legend of twilight manga

Step 2: Find out how many pages of each book you need to read a day:

To find out how many pages of each book you’re going to need to read a day, you’re actually going to have to be mathematical. You’re first going to have to find out how many readable pages are in your book. Whatever After has 163 and .Hack has 173. Once you know how many pages are in each book divide that by the number of days in the allowed period. Since my goal is 3 weeks I’m going to divide 163 by 21 which will give me 7 pages to read a day from Whatever After and 8 pages from.Hack. This will give you time to finish the book in time.

Step 3: List the pages you read to on a piece of paper to stick into your book if you need to:

If you’re anything like I am write down what pages you need to read to every day, say so that you’re not adding it all in your head before you go and read your book. It really comes in handy if you want to tackle two days instead of one day if you really want to.

Step 4: Read the pages you plan on reading every day.

Set some time to read the pages that you plan on reading. As far as the books that I’m reading right are concerned seven pages isn’t a lot and I can read 7 pages in a short sitting if I wanted to. The time you have to read a certain number of pages and how many pages you want to read all depends on you and your deadlines anyway.

Step 5: Take notes about what you’ve read every day

Take little notes about what you just read, just in case you think you may forget what the book was what or if there’s something you want to bring up to your friends, online in a forum or Facebook group, or whatever it gives a good visual for you as the reader to remember what you read.

These tips are only a suggestion. I’m sure you can find a different solution to your problems. This is just the way that I like to take care of reading more than one book

10 Disney Movies that Are on my all time favorite movie list

Should I have quoted one of my favorite movies to start off this blog post or would have been to cliché? Disney has really got me excited lately for all the live-action Disney remakes that they have coming out. At first, I was scared. How on earth can they remake any of my favorite movies and turn them into live-action remakes? How on earth could Disney do such a thing to me? It wasn’t until I thought it through if the kids watch the live-action movies, maybe, just maybe they’d like the cartoon version as well.

Whether or not my favorite Disney movie has become a live-action already or not. I compiled my top 10 Disney movies for the world to see. ’m not going to talk about the live-action remakes at all I mean the cartoon versions the classics. My favorite Disney movies may not be your favorite Disney movies, or then again they just might be your favorite? Where do yours fall between my favorites? I

10. Oliver and CompanyEvery single time I’ve watched Oliver in Company I felt bad for Oliver, the cute orange kitten that nobody wanted to adopt. I’ve felt like there was a time that I’ve been looked over and people didn’t seem to get me, a time when I didn’t fit in with the mold. I was never adopted but it didn’t mean that I didn’t relate to Oliver in one way or another.
oliver and company cat GIF by Disney

9. Lilo & Stitch

Stitch is cute, and the message behind the movie is one of my favorite messages, “Ohana Means Family, Family means no-one gets left behind or forgotten.” Through thick and thin you see how much Lilo means to Nani, and how she hopes that getting a dog would help Lilo grow. Exactly that, is what makes Lilo and Stitch one of my top movies.
Sorry Lilo And Stitch GIF

8.Bambi

Whenever I’m outside and I see clover, or I’m eating something that doesn’t taste too good but happens to be good for me. I remember what Thumper said about food. Sometimes you do have to go through some bad stuff before you can try some amazing things. It’s my new motto when it comes to being gluten-free!
baby animal bunny GIF by Disney

7. The Fox and The Hound

I love dogs, but I really love foxes. This time and probably one of the only times in history a Fox and a Hound can get along with each other. I know the actual The Fox and The Hound movie is 20x’s darker than the way that Disney is selling it. I keep in mind Disney’s reference, that friends can come in many shapes and colors.
the fox and the hound GIF

6. The Brave Little Toaster

Way before Toy Story, I already knew that my appliances could talk and have conversations with each other. My TV was probably talking to my computer when I was at the store and I didn’t know it. My toaster was flirting with the microwave, and don’t even get me started thinking about the conversations between my laptop and the X-Box no way! I kind of feel bad that my mom was subjected to watching the Brave Little Toaster so many times.
brave little toaster animation GIF

5. The Lion King

Simba and Nala will be two of the coolest cats ever. I named two pet cats when I was a child after Simba and Nala. The storyline was a bit dark and bit on the edge, a “brother” kills his brother so that he could become king. That was dark and gritty, but I didn’t care about it being dark and gritty. I just loved the movie and I loved the storyline.

4. Beauty and the Beast

Finally, there was a movie with a character that was a lot like I was. A book women a loner. Someone who wasn’t like the rest. I liked all the other Disney Princesses, but I could relate to wanting to read more than finding a prince. Once she actually fell for another book-loving man (beast), it gave me hope that there were men out there that actually did like to read and that reading wasn’t just a hobby set aside for females. Then when the beast turned into the handsome Princess Adam my heart was in 1000 pieces. He was good looking and read books
beauty and the beast please attempt to be a gentleman GIF

3. Aladdin

If Adam was who I wanted to base a man’s looks after, it was Aladdin was who I liked personality-wise. All Aladdin really wanted was Jasmine and because he knew that he had to be a king he did just that. I’m not saying lying is a good thing or hoping someone can help you skirt around the rules. I loved the kindness, despite his upbringing that Aladdin had in his heart.

The movie itself was a classic as well. Robin Williams. Flying Carpets. Raja. Abu. These were all classic characters and actors that will be remembered for such an amazing movie.

2. The Nightmare Before Christmas

It’ll be disputed if The Nightmare Before Christmas is a cartoon or not. But I am one of those Nightmare Before Christmas addicts, one of those people who want everything The Nightmare Before Christmas related. Jack and Sally, and the whole gang are a great way to spend my Christmas, Halloween, and almost every other holiday.

1. Lady and The Tramp

I actually owned a pet dog while growing up named Lady, specifically named after Lady from Lady and the Tramp. Lady and the Tramp became my favorite movie because I loved how the dogs could talk with each other and how much comedy was put into one movie. I still believe I can own my self a muzzle and pull a log with it if I tried.

The question to my readers: What Disney cartoon is your favorite? If they haven’t turned it into a live-action movie yet, would you watch it? If they have turned it into a live-action movie what did you think of it?

Drinking more water? Tips I’ve learned

I haven't ever been someone who enjoyed drinking water. If I could skip over drinking water I would, but I know I can't. I'm not the only one who's not a huge fan of drinking water, I'm almost sure of it. That's why I had to find out ways to consume the right amount of water a day so that my body has what it needs.

1. Know beforehand how much water consumption you need a day. The doctor told me to drink half my body weight in ounces to be sure I am drinking the right amount of water. Half of one twenty is 60 and 60 which is about 3.5 bottles of water a day. Which isn’t as much water as I thought I should be drinking. I always imagine a table of water, that I”m forced to drink.

2. Freeze your water: I like my water frozen, and taking a sip as it thaws. I’m not drinking my water extra quickly, but I’m able to get through the water in a timely matter which is really nice. I’m always reminding myself that I dislike warm water, and it keeps me going.

3. Find other activities to pair with drinking water: If you like playing a video game or reading, this is a great time to drink water. While your mind is on what you’re doing, you’re still drinking water. I’ll even skip over the idea that the water isn’t frozen if I’m sidetracked doing something else.

4. Try different bottles: Walmart, Dollar Tree, and almost everywhere has cups, water bottles. They don’t need to be on sale, they just have to be able to speak to you. Well not exactly talk to you, but they need to remind you that drinking water I cool.

5. Find a tracker app: If all of the above helps but you need an extra push they have apps online and websites that can help you track how much water you’ve drunk in the day. To see it written down may actually help.

6. Don’t feel bad if you fall off the horse: If you fall under your goal. It’s fine, it happens, don’t fret, don’t worry. Just get back on the horse you fell off of and go back to drinking water the next day.
